Introduction & Group History
The Sussex & Surrey Coppice group was formed out of the Wessex Coppice Group. In May 1997 a number of coppice workers in south-east England decided that a local group was needed to promote the industry and its products.

Coppice workers tend to lead quite isolated lives often tucked away deep in the woods with few people knowing of their existence, some travel daily to the same woodland that they have worked all their lives while others work a different wood each season.

But whatever their lifestyle they are all committed to promoting the coppice industry and to informing landowners and the public of the importance of having traditional coppice woodlands brought back in to production.

An elected committee of nine members runs the group and meets on a quarterly basis. The committee includes a chairman and vice-chairman, treasurer and secretary.

In addition, members meet quarterly. On these occasions there is usually a guest speaker and members can debate topics pertinent to their work. The group aims to produce four newsletters a year which are sent to all members and a number of organisations interested in coppicing and the coppice industry. Members are encouraged to submit articles, photographs, etc.  for publication.  The group is administered by a member from West Horsley in Surrey.  The Sussex & Surrey Coppice Group is supported by the Sussex Downs Conservation Board, West Sussex County Council and East Sussex County Council.
